The Dark Half

The Mary Turner Collection

Scope and Contents In May of 1918, Hampton Smith, a 31 year old White plantation owner in Brooks County, Georgia was shot and killed by one of his Black workers named Sydney Johnson. What ensued after the shooting was a mob driven manhunt for Johnson and others thought to be involved in his decision to kill Hampton Smith. Thomas Edward Watson--The Jeffersonian

Scope and Contents The Jeffersonian was a weekly newspaper published by Jeffersonian Publishing, which was owned by Thomas E. Watson. The paper served to promote the Populist Party. Watson would use the paper as a platform for Watsons attacks against the Catholic church, African Americans, Jews, the League of Nations, President Woodrow Wilson, and the war effort in World War I. Time Capsule

Scope and Contents

Pictures and copies of some items that went into the time capsule at Drexel Park in Valdosta to be opened in 2060. Many of these items relate to Moody Airforce base. The VSU Archivist oversaw the packing of the Time Capsule, and there is a copy of the Valdosta Daily Times for the date in 2010 that features the Archivist with items for the capsule on the cover. The capsule was buried under a marker bench in Drexel park in 2010.
